Cashmere represents a fabric of rare quality and among its countless merits also boasts excellent versatility. Very often we tend to identify cashmere only with sweaters and pullovers, but in reality this yarn is also used to make stoles, scarves and pashminas. In this article we are going to see how to wear a stole, scarf or pashmina depending on the style of our outfit. First, however, we need to understand the difference between these accessories.
Difference between pashmina, stole and scarf
Pashmina is often used as a synonym for scarf, but it is actually è different because it is longer and has a much lighter warp. In fact, originally this accessory was only woven from one type of cashmere wool, that derived from changthangi goats in the Himalayas. Pashminas are made from a yarn so fine that it cannot be worked by machine but only by hand. As it became increasingly popular in Western fashion, the term pashmina has been slightly expanded going tod also identify patterns made of cotton and other fibers. The stole is always a cut of rectangular fabric, smaller than the pashima but larger than a scarf. It is a very elegant accessory, in fact it is often worn for weddings or formal occasions. The stole is mostly worn wrapped around the arms and shoulders. The scarf as we all know it is the complement, along with gloves, that protects us from the cold. However, it is also often used directly over pullovers to enrich a casual, sporty outfit.
How to match the pashima, scarf and stole
The first rule we could follow to find the right match between accessory and outfit concerns the types of fabrics: we need to match similar fabrics in terms of heaviness, weave and texture. A cashmere pashmina is unlikely to match a chiffon blouse. The same goes for a cashmere stole such as the Kefiah model from Capua Cashmere.. This 100% cashmere stole can be paired with a cloth coat or worn over a long cardigan of the same yarn. A cashmere stole is perfect also worn with a crepe jacket or Jersey outerwear, not with a satin or linen garment for example. The cashmere scarf, on the other hand, is even more versatile. È a must have worn over a cashmere choker but has many other pairing possibilities. For example, it can also be worn with a hard or softshell sports jacket on a mountain vacation.
A thousand ways to tie a scarf, pashmina or stole
Another suggestion for enhancing our precious cashmere accessory concerns how to knot it according to the style we want to follow. In fact, there are infinite ways of knotting these complements. For example, if we wear the stole à la parisienne (shoulders and arms covered up to the elbow with one end simply thrown behind the back), we might attend an elegant dinner party. In this case we could fasten the end of the stole with a brooch. For a more informal look, we could pass the stole behind the neck by dropping the ends in front so as to stop them with a waist belt. The stole worn in this way is also suitable when paired with jeans.
Even for the pashmina, the knot can suggest a sporty or elegant look. If we wear it over the shoulders simply with a knot on the front at the height of the diaphragm, in the manner of a shawl, the pashmina can replace the stole in glamorous events. If, on the other hand, we tie it around the neck with a double twist and the ends at the front, then we can wear it over a sporty cardigan and culotte pants and sneakers.
The scarf follows the same rule as the knot. For example, if we simply wear it passed inside the neck with the ends falling to the front in the manner of a drape, the scarf will be a symbol of unquestionable elegance and charm. In this case it will be appropriate for women's suits or men's suits even with double-breasted lacing.
