Discovering the king of yarns, all you need to know about cashmere

by Capua Cashmere published on February 21, 2022

Cashmere has always been considered one of the noblest yarns, a textile fibre from which timeless garments are made, suitable for protection against both the cold winter and summer heat. Cashmere is a world waiting to be discovered, and we at Capua Cashmere look forward to accompanying you on this wonderful journey from faraway Asia.

 Where does cashmere come from?

To understand the origins of this textile fibre, one has to travel as far as mysterious Mongolia, or Tibet, or even the fascinating territory of Kashmir, in Afghanistan, and discover the Goat Hircus. Exactly, it is precisely from this animal that a rough form of cashmere is obtainedevery spring the shepherds shear the goats, in a manual combing by hand, which, according to tradition, takes place in the hair moulting period and in a way that does not injure the animal in any way.

Why is cashmere so expensive?

Because it is rare, almost like diamonds. Indeed, cashmere could be considered the diamond of yarns! Just think that, from each goat, only two hundred grams of hair are obtained and no more. A truly limited quantity which, together with the careful and refined subsequent processing, determines the very high value of a cashmere garment.

 How is cashmere worked?

In the phase following shearing, the cashmere is processed in three steps:

  1. The phase of digiarration serves to remove the raw part of the fleece, the 'gibs', i.e. the impurities that can be found in the raw material. It is probably the longest operation and one that must be carried out with great care and meticulousness precisely because it is from here that true quality raw material is obtained.
  2. The weaving phase. During this phase, the fibrous material is spun for weaving, i.e. the fibres are twisted into threads, two or more threads are twisted together. A very fine four-thread cashmere can be obtained, such as the one that makes up our 4-thread pocket cardigan. This step will result in a final product with a perfect weave, smooth and soft to the touch, ready to pamper anyone who wears it.
  3. In the final stage of spinning the hanks are fed into spinning machines that weave the fibres into yarns.

We at Capua Cashmere have decided to to maintain a Made in Italy supply chainby collaborating with skilled craftsmen in the textile mills in Tuscany and Umbria. This, too, is our strength.

What are the main characteristics of cashmere?

A unique raw material that, if processed optimally, can guarantee true excellence.. Here are some characteristics of cashmere that make it such a special fibre to wear:

  • It is really perfect for both winter and summer because of its ability to maintain a constant body temperature. It acts as a true thermoregulator.
  • Does not cause itching or irritationwhich is why it is considered a true pampering for the skin!
  • It is capable of absorb moisture and sweat.
  • It is a fine fabric but, for this very reason, be careful not to use it more than one day in a row!

How do you recognise real cashmere?

  • Always evaluate certain characteristics such as the fineness of the weft, the length of the yarn, the colour of the fibres. The longer and finer the fibres, the higher the quality of the jumper, scarf or plaid you want to buy, and the better it will retain all its properties after washing.
  • The number of threads making up the. We have made a very precise choice, namely to produce 2-thread count cashmere garments such as, for example, the men's half-neck pulloveror with 4 threads such as the turtleneck pullover suitable for a woman.
  • Do not underestimate the label! Always look at it carefully before buying. By regulation it is a veritable hotbed of information about the garment you are about to buy!
